P0011: "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

The engine computer has found that the bank 1 "A" camshaft timing is more advanced than it commanded, or the variable valve timing system is not performing as expected.

CodeP0011
SystemEngine timing / variable valve timing
Typical urgencyModerate to high
Can I keep driving?Limit driving until checked. Poor idle or stalling can occur, and timing problems can get worse.

What does P0011 mean?

Many engines use variable valve timing (VVT) to change camshaft timing while driving. The ECM controls a solenoid that directs engine oil pressure to an actuator on the camshaft.

The ECM compares the commanded camshaft position with the actual position from the camshaft sensor. When the actual timing is too far advanced or does not follow the command, it stores P0011.

Because the system is driven by engine oil, oil level and oil condition matter more than many drivers expect.

Common symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard starting
  • Rough or unstable idle
  • Stalling in some cases
  • Reduced performance and higher fuel consumption

Common causes

The causes below are the ones commonly seen with P0011. The actual cause can vary by vehicle, engine and mileage, so treat this list as a starting point, not a diagnosis.

  • Low engine oil level or oil that does not meet the manufacturer's specification
  • A faulty or sticking camshaft timing oil control solenoid, or its wiring
  • A faulty VVT actuator
  • Incorrect camshaft timing

What to check with a scanner

  • Check the oil level and condition first, and confirm the correct oil grade was used at the last change.
  • In Live data, compare desired and actual camshaft position if your vehicle reports them.
  • Inspect the oil control solenoid connector and wiring.
  • Note any related codes such as P0016 or other camshaft timing codes.

How to read and clear P0011 with OBD Master Pro

  1. Plug in your adapter. Connect a generic ELM327 (or ELM329) OBD2 adapter to the diagnostic port, usually under the dashboard on the driver's side. Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi and USB OTG adapters are supported.
  2. Switch the ignition on. Turn the key to ON or start the engine, depending on your car.
  3. Connect in OBD Master Pro. Open the app, go to Connection and pick your adapter. Classic Bluetooth adapters connect from the Bluetooth tab, Bluetooth LE adapters from the BLE tab with no pairing needed. Use the generic OBD2 / EOBD profile or your car's brand profile.
  4. Read the codes. Open the fault codes screen to see stored, pending and permanent codes. Confirm P0011 is listed and note any other codes, since they often explain the cause.
  5. Check the details. Look at freeze frame data, Live data and, where your car supports it, Mode 06 test results (see the checks above).
  6. Fix, then clear. After the repair, clear the codes to turn off the check engine light. Clearing also resets the emissions readiness monitors, so drive normally and check the readiness screen before any inspection. Permanent codes cannot be erased with a scan tool; they clear on their own once the car's self test passes.

Tip: you can also look up P0011 and other codes in the app's DTC search without connecting to a car. If your adapter will not connect, use Connection > Share connection log and email it to support. Many cheap ELM327 clones only handle basic engine OBD2, which is all you need for P0011.

When to see a mechanic

Get professional help if any of these apply:

  • The engine rattles, stalls or runs very rough
  • The oil is low, dirty or the change is overdue and the code returns after correcting it
  • You suspect a timing chain or belt problem

If you are unsure, a qualified technician can confirm the cause with tests such as smoke testing, pressure testing or scope readings. Clearing a code does not repair the fault.

P0011 FAQ

Can low oil cause P0011?

Yes. The VVT system uses engine oil pressure, so low or incorrect oil is a common contributing cause. Check the oil first.

Is P0011 the same as P0010?

No. P0010 points to the actuator circuit itself. P0011 means the timing is over-advanced or the system is not performing as commanded.

Can I drive with P0011?

For short distances if the car runs well, but poor idle and stalling can occur. Diagnose it soon.

Check P0011 on your own car

OBD Master Pro turns your Android phone and a generic ELM327 adapter into a code reader: read and clear codes, view freeze frame and live data, and check emissions readiness.
