P0101: Mass or Volume Air Flow "A" Circuit Range/Performance
The engine computer has decided that the airflow reported by the MAF sensor is outside the range it expects for the current engine speed and load.
What does P0101 mean?
The mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures how much air enters the engine. The ECM uses that number to calculate how much fuel to inject and how much ignition timing to use, so a wrong reading affects the whole mixture.
P0101 is a plausibility code. The sensor is producing a signal, but the value does not match what the ECM predicts from other inputs such as throttle position, rpm and manifold pressure.
Because the mixture depends on the MAF reading, fuel trim codes such as P0171, P0172, P0174 or P0175 can appear alongside P0101.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Sometimes no noticeable symptoms
- Rough running or poor idle
- Lack of power or hesitation
- Black smoke from the exhaust in some cases
- Higher fuel consumption
Common causes
The causes below are the ones commonly seen with P0101. The actual cause can vary by vehicle, engine and mileage, so treat this list as a starting point, not a diagnosis.
- A dirty or contaminated MAF sensing element
- A failed MAF sensor
- Intake air leaks, such as a split intake boot, PCV hose or intake gasket
- Wiring or connector problems in the MAF circuit
What to check with a scanner
- Inspect the intake duct between the air filter and the throttle body for cracks or loose clamps.
- In Live data, watch the MAF reading at idle and as rpm rises. It should increase smoothly with engine speed.
- Check fuel trims. Large corrections alongside P0101 support a MAF or intake leak problem.
- Clean the sensor only with a cleaner made for MAF sensors, then clear the code and recheck.
- Note freeze frame data before clearing.
How to read and clear P0101 with OBD Master Pro
- Plug in your adapter. Connect a generic ELM327 (or ELM329) OBD2 adapter to the diagnostic port, usually under the dashboard on the driver's side. Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi and USB OTG adapters are supported.
- Switch the ignition on. Turn the key to ON or start the engine, depending on your car.
- Connect in OBD Master Pro. Open the app, go to Connection and pick your adapter. Classic Bluetooth adapters connect from the Bluetooth tab, Bluetooth LE adapters from the BLE tab with no pairing needed. Use the generic OBD2 / EOBD profile or your car's brand profile.
- Read the codes. Open the fault codes screen to see stored, pending and permanent codes. Confirm P0101 is listed and note any other codes, since they often explain the cause.
- Check the details. Look at freeze frame data, Live data and, where your car supports it, Mode 06 test results (see the checks above).
- Fix, then clear. After the repair, clear the codes to turn off the check engine light. Clearing also resets the emissions readiness monitors, so drive normally and check the readiness screen before any inspection. Permanent codes cannot be erased with a scan tool; they clear on their own once the car's self test passes.
Tip: you can also look up P0101 and other codes in the app's DTC search without connecting to a car. If your adapter will not connect, use Connection > Share connection log and email it to support. Many cheap ELM327 clones only handle basic engine OBD2, which is all you need for P0101.
When to see a mechanic
Get professional help if any of these apply:
- The engine stalls or runs very poorly
- The code returns after cleaning the sensor and fixing obvious leaks
- You need wiring tests with a multimeter
If you are unsure, a qualified technician can confirm the cause with tests such as smoke testing, pressure testing or scope readings. Clearing a code does not repair the fault.
P0101 FAQ
Can I drive with P0101?
Usually for a short time if the car runs well. If it stalls, hesitates badly or smokes, get it checked soon.
Will cleaning the MAF sensor fix P0101?
Sometimes. A contaminated sensing element is a common cause. If the code returns, check for intake leaks and wiring faults before replacing the sensor.
What is the difference between P0101 and P0102?
P0101 means the reading is implausible. P0102 means the signal is lower than the circuit should ever produce, which points more toward wiring, a connector or a failed sensor.
Check P0101 on your own car
OBD Master Pro turns your Android phone and a generic ELM327 adapter into a code reader: read and clear codes, view freeze frame and live data, and check emissions readiness.
