P0430: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

The engine computer has found that the catalytic converter on bank 2 is not storing and releasing oxygen as well as expected.

Can I keep driving?Usually drivable in the short term, but it can fail an emissions test and should be diagnosed soon.

What does P0430 mean?

P0430 is the bank 2 version of P0420, so it only appears on engines with two banks, such as most V6 and V8 engines. Bank 2 is the side that does not contain cylinder 1.

The ECM compares the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors on bank 2. When the downstream sensor starts to mirror the upstream one, it decides converter efficiency is too low and stores P0430.

If you have both P0420 and P0430, it is worth checking for a cause that affects both sides, such as misfires, a fuel mixture problem, or exhaust leaks, before assuming both converters failed at once.

Common symptoms

  • Check engine light on, usually steady
  • Often no change in driving
  • Failed emissions or inspection test
  • Sometimes a sulfur smell from the exhaust
  • Rattling or reduced power if the converter is damaged or restricted

Common causes

The causes below are the ones commonly seen with P0430. The actual cause can vary by vehicle, engine and mileage, so treat this list as a starting point, not a diagnosis.

  • An aged or damaged bank 2 catalytic converter
  • A faulty downstream or upstream bank 2 oxygen sensor
  • Exhaust leaks near the bank 2 sensors
  • Engine problems such as misfires, a rich mixture or oil consumption that harmed the converter
  • Wiring or connector faults at the oxygen sensors

What to check with a scanner

  • Fix any misfire or fuel trim codes first.
  • In Live data, compare bank 2 sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor 2 O2 readings. A downstream sensor that switches rapidly like the upstream one is consistent with low efficiency.
  • Use Mode 06, where supported, to see the bank 2 catalyst monitor result.
  • Check freeze frame data and look for exhaust leaks around the bank 2 manifold and pipes.

How to read and clear P0430 with OBD Master Pro

  1. Plug in your adapter. Connect a generic ELM327 (or ELM329) OBD2 adapter to the diagnostic port, usually under the dashboard on the driver's side. Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi and USB OTG adapters are supported.
  2. Switch the ignition on. Turn the key to ON or start the engine, depending on your car.
  3. Connect in OBD Master Pro. Open the app, go to Connection and pick your adapter. Classic Bluetooth adapters connect from the Bluetooth tab, Bluetooth LE adapters from the BLE tab with no pairing needed. Use the generic OBD2 / EOBD profile or your car's brand profile.
  4. Read the codes. Open the fault codes screen to see stored, pending and permanent codes. Confirm P0430 is listed and note any other codes, since they often explain the cause.
  5. Check the details. Look at freeze frame data, Live data and, where your car supports it, Mode 06 test results (see the checks above).
  6. Fix, then clear. After the repair, clear the codes to turn off the check engine light. Clearing also resets the emissions readiness monitors, so drive normally and check the readiness screen before any inspection. Permanent codes cannot be erased with a scan tool; they clear on their own once the car's self test passes.

Tip: you can also look up P0430 and other codes in the app's DTC search without connecting to a car. If your adapter will not connect, use Connection > Share connection log and email it to support. Many cheap ELM327 clones only handle basic engine OBD2, which is all you need for P0430.

When to see a mechanic

Get professional help if any of these apply:

  • The check engine light is flashing
  • There is a rattle, a loss of power or a burning smell
  • The code returns after replacing a sensor or converter
  • You need to pass an inspection and the cause is unclear

If you are unsure, a qualified technician can confirm the cause with tests such as smoke testing, pressure testing or scope readings. Clearing a code does not repair the fault.

P0430 FAQ

Can I drive with P0430?

Usually yes for a short time if the car runs normally and the light is steady. Diagnose it soon, because the cause can get worse and it will likely fail an inspection.

What is the difference between P0420 and P0430?

They describe the same problem on different sides of the engine. P0420 is bank 1, the side with cylinder 1, and P0430 is bank 2.

Can an oxygen sensor cause P0430?

Yes. A slow or faulty bank 2 oxygen sensor, or an exhaust leak near it, can trigger P0430 even if the converter is still working.

Is the converter covered by warranty?

In the US, federal emissions warranty rules cover the catalytic converter on 1995 and newer light duty vehicles for 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first, for defects in materials or workmanship.

Check P0430 on your own car

OBD Master Pro turns your Android phone and a generic ELM327 adapter into a code reader: read and clear codes, view freeze frame and live data, and check emissions readiness.
